(Experimental Physics Industrial Control System)

EPICS was initially developed by LANSCE-8, the Accelerator Controls, Automation, and Computer Networking Group in collaboration with the Accelerator Systems Division of Argonne National Laboratory.

The purpose of EPICS is to:

• To provide a fast, easy interface to supervisory control, steady-state control, and data acquisition.
• To provide an Operator Interface to all control system parameters.
• To provide a means to log data.
• To allow for the management of alarms.
• To provide sequential control with convenient routines for database interface.
• To allow database access that interfaces the control system data with data analysis, adaptive control algorithms, and any other functions not provided in the control system.
