Hands-on educational opportunities will be available using the Lujan Center neutron spectrometers, and will feature experiments in small angle neutron scattering, polarized neutron reflectometry, inelastic scattering, and elastic scattering including diffraction and total (pair distribution) scattering.

Lectures will be presented by world recognized experts in the field and will span all levels from introductory concepts to advanced magnetic systems and techniques.  The introductory talks on magnetism will be presented at the level of John Crangle’s Introduction to Solid State Magnetism and lectures on the myriad of neutron scattering techniques relevant to studies of magnetic materials will be presented at the level of G.L. Squires' Introduction to the Theory of Thermal Neutron Scattering.  Real-life applications of neutron scattering will be presented by leading researchers.  Complemented by intensive practical training, students will leave the school with the knowledge to identify problems that can be solved with neutron scattering, and the confidence to write good proposals, to obtain beam time, to perform neutron scattering experiments, and to analyze their data.

The school is limited to 30 participants who will be selected from their application materials including reference letters and a statement of “why neutron scattering could be (is) relevant to my research.” Applicants should be full time graduate students or postdocs in an appropriate discipline related to magnetism.  Industrial researchers and advanced undergraduate students are also invited to apply.  Applicants need not be U.S. citizens; however preference will be given to students attending North American universities..

The LANSCE neutron scattering school is supported by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy.  The school is tuition-free and assistance for travel, lodging and subsistence is available.
